"Free" course listings are often free-to-start but paywalled the moment you want a certificate or graded feedback. Here's how to find courses that stay genuinely free for actual learning.

Audit mode on Coursera and edX

Most university-partnered courses on these platforms can be audited at no cost — you get full access to video lectures and readings, just without a certificate or graded assignments. For learning the material itself, this is often functionally identical to the paid version.

MIT OpenCourseWare

Full course materials — lecture notes, problem sets, sometimes video — from actual MIT courses, published with no paywall at any tier, aimed at self-directed learners rather than certificate-seekers.

freeCodeCamp

A genuinely free, project-based curriculum for web development and related skills, with a large community and free certification upon completion — one of the few platforms where "free" includes the credential too.

What to watch for

A course that's free to start but requires payment partway through to "continue" or "unlock" later modules is a different model than true audit access — check what's actually included before investing time.
